to Monkey Island is a point-and-click adventure video game developed by
Terrible Toybox and published by Devolver Digital. It was released for Nintendo
Switch and Microsoft Windows via Steam on September 19, 2022, and will be
released on November 8, 2022, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series.
Game mode
Return to Monkey Island is a point-and-click adventure game. The player has the possibility, if he is stuck in the puzzles, to use clues and thus advance in the story, as well as a casual mode making the puzzles simpler and less blocking for current players.
Development
Ron Gilbert and Dave Grossman, who also worked on the development of previous games in the Monkey Island series, are responsible for the game's direction and script. The composers are Michael Land, Peter McConnell, and Clint Bajakian, who also composed the music from previous games in the series. The game is a direct sequel to the previous game Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge.
According to Gilbert in 2022, the game had been in development for about two years. It was Devolver Digital who contacted Gilbert: from then on, the development began. Devolver signed a deal with Disney, which acquired the rights to the series after acquiring LucasArts in 2012. Gilbert and Grossman came up with the idea for the game and decided to go with a new visual style instead of the previous pixel art. The art style was chosen among other game elements to tell its story.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the development of the game was done remotely. The development team has also been reduced, which Gilbert says is important in all creative endeavors: "In a small group, everyone can participate and come up with ideas."
The game is officially announced in April 2022 by Devolver Digital. It was later re-shown during a Nintendo Direct in June 2022 with a gameplay trailer.
On June 30, 2022, two months after the first images of the game, Ron Gilbert indicated that he would no longer communicate on the project after strong criticism of the graphic aspect of the game.
On August 23, 2022, during Gamescom 2022, a trailer revealed that the game will be released on September 19, 2022, which is by the way Pirate Language Day.
Distribution
Guybrush Threepwood is played by Dominic Armato, who has also served as a voice actor in the previous games. Earl Boen, who previously played LeChuck, is not returning to the game; he stated "he was retired and too old", but gave his consent to the casting of a new voice actor. Other returns include Alexandra Boyd as Elaine Marley and Danny Delk as Skull Murray.
